Exercises in Scientific English

Scientific English Exercises

For this exercises I will be diving into the grammar and construction of scientific sentences, for this i used the University of Chile portal that allows you to do different subjects.
The course aims at  developing skills in reading comprehension of various kinds of  reading material, namely, textbooks, manuals, scientific articles and papers to mention a few.
The first exercise I tried was Antioxidants vs Free Radicals; the mission is to create sentences in 5 minutes using the vocabulary provided.
During this exercise I scored 96% and the paragraph I constructed was:

Free radicals are unstable, reactive molecules formed during metabolism. They can seriously damage healthy cells and may be responsible for cancer, heart problems and diseases of aging. Antioxidants can bind to free oxygen radicals, neutralizing them and preventing their harmful effect on health.

The second exercise was a filled in the blanks exercise
Using ReferencesUse the following references to fill the blanks :its - this - that - they - their - them - where - then - the former - the latter - such a conclusion - these products - this habit - this milk product - these bacteria - this conditionThe origins of yogurt are in the Caucasus mountains of Russia, but today this milk product is found in most countries. Yogurt was one of the first foods that was promoted widely because of its possible health benefits. In 1908, E. Metchnikov stated in a book that its consumption was responsible for the longevity of the people living in the Russian mountains. Since then, many people have questioned the scientific validity of such a conclusion, but the advent of probiotics has changed that. Now there is much evidence that probiotics or foods that contain live bacteria are good for health.Yogurt is strictly defined as a milk product produced by the action of two bacteria--Streptoccus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus. In addition, yogurt may contain bifido bacteria and sometimes Lactobacillus caseiThe former two are needed to convert milk to yogurt and the latter two are added because of their health promoting properties.
The bacteria in yogurt must be alive when consumed to be truly effective, thus proper production, packaging, storage, shipping and refrigeration are necessary to ensure this condition. Although no standards exist, yogurt should contain 100 to 1000 million live bacteria per ml to be effective.
The acidity of the stomach kills most bacteria before they pass into the intestines. If this did not occur, we would be sick more often. By consuming a very large number of bacteria in yogurt, some survive and pass through the stomach into the intestines, where a wide variety of different bacteria coexist. Some of these bacteria are beneficial and some are not. The yogurt bacteria must compete with the normal intestinal bacteria for nutrients and sites to adhere to. Because the yogurt bacteria are foreign, they do not find adhesion sites along the intestinal wall and are quickly flushed through the intestines and excreted in the feces.
Yogurt must be eaten regularly to be effective. This habit is necessary. A steady supply of yogurt means that its bacteria are present in the intestines, where they can benefit the host. If you stop eating yogurt, they are all very soon eliminated.

Although yogurt is the best known probiotic, there are other products on the market such as kefir, acidophilus milk and fermented vegetables that contain live bacteria. The bacteria in these products give them health promoting properties. They must be alive and must be consumed in large numbers continuously to be effective.

Reading Scientific Articles

Reading and Understanding Scientific Articles Part of having a scientific background means reading technical articles that include scientific vocabulary. Scientific articles are considered complex as a product of the the linguistic, the rhetorical and the conceptual variables.  For this learning exercise I chose two food related articles and made a list of the new words and after searching for their meaning. Below you will find the list of words with meaning and a short description of the articles.
